November 29, 2025

With only two days before the general elections in Honduras, the Trump Administration has escalated U.S. intervention, undermining Honduran self-determination and sovereignty. Meanwhile, Honduran social movements are warning of a potential electoral coup, a possibility that further contributes to the deep polarization and fear-mongering characterizing the elections.

On November 28, President Donald Trump called on the Honduran electorate to vote for Tito Asfura, promising U.S. economic support if Asfura wins and to punish Honduras by withholding this support if he does not. Perhaps even more sinister and disgraceful is Trump’s promise to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez (JOH), sentenced in the U.S. to 45 years in prison after a trial by jury for drug trafficking and weapons-related charges in 2024.

While the Trump Administration affirms to be fighting against drug trafficking and “narco-terrorism,” using that claim to justify military strikes and extrajudicial killings in the Pacific and Caribbean, considered a crime against humanity by a former ICC prosecutor, it now plans to pardon a high-level convicted drug-trafficker. Former U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland even accused JOH of “abusing his power to support one of the largest and most violent drug trafficking conspiracies in the world.”

The United States hypocrisy could not be more obvious. The U.S. does not care about drug-trafficking or, much less, the protection of democracy. Its only interest is to protect U.S. imperial and extractive interests and re-assert U.S. domination over Honduras and the Latin American region.

We denounce any and all acts by the United States that attempt to interfere with the Honduran elections on November 30, 2025. We consider that these threats made by President Trump are creating a dangerous situation that undermines democracy and harms the Honduran people. We remain vigilant at all times and stand in solidarity with the Honduran people in the wake of active U.S. intervention.
