During the month of February, campesino and grassroots organizations expressed their concern about a proposed bill that could weaken the country’s agrarian reform by prioritizing agro-industrial production at the cost of campesino families. The bill would weaken administrative controls and facilitate criminalization by authorizing the immediate intervention of security forces.

More than 50 organizations representing 7 different countries and regions sign an open letter to Honduran authorities for the criminalization of Maya Chortí defenders for their fight in defense of nature.

During the month of December, Honduran grassroots organizations rejected the interference of US President Donald Trump in the Honduran electoral process. Trump favored the National Party candidate, Nasry Asfura, in an act that violated the right to self-determination of the Honduran people. In January, Asfura assumed the presidency of Honduras amid strong accusations of electoral fraud.
Meanwhile, the rights of organized campesino families continue to be violated by the criminal groups “Los Cachos” and “Los Pechugas,” responsible for forcibly evicting campesino families from their lands and murdering campesinos organized under the Agrarian Platform.

During the month of November, general elections were held in the country. Prior to the elections, the Agrarian Platform issued a statement warning of a plan to create the political conditions for an electoral coup, one that would favor the return to power of the business, political, and criminal sectors that had benefited from the 2009 coup and the narco-dictatorship. Days later, popular organizations spoke out against US interference in the electoral process and called for the consolidation of popular unity to defend the self-determination of peoples and territories.
Preliminary Election Results in Honduras: U.S. Interference Deepens Existing Tensions
On Sunday November 30th, Honduras held general elections. Despite concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, and some irregularities reported throughout the voting period, the election took place in a peaceful and orderly fashion, with robust turnout. Since then, delays in vote counting, close numbers between the frontrunners, and continuing U.S. interference have increased tensions in the country.
Communique: Trump’s Dangerous Intervention in Honduras Ahead of Elections & Pardon for Drug-Trafficking Ex-President
With only two days before the general elections in Honduras, the Trump Administration has escalated U.S. intervention, undermining Honduran self-determination and sovereignty. Meanwhile, Honduran social movements are warning of a potential electoral coup, a possibility that further contributes to the deep polarization and fear-mongering characterizing the elections.
Communique: No to U.S. Threats and Interference
On November 30, 2025 Honduras will hold national elections in the midst of escalating U.S. interference in the region that includes military actions and threats of outright war against Venezuela, Colombia and Cuba from the Trump/Rubio administration. U.S. officials in the White House, State Department and Congress have been nurturing a propaganda campaign by the Honduran right wing press and organizations against the progressive forces in the country reminiscent of Cold War propaganda.
